A Wikipedia que até então dividia seus servidores entre Red Hat, Fedora e Ubuntu Linux está dizendo adeus a chapeuzinho vermelho e seu irmão caçula. Os 400 servidores que ainda mantinham estas distribuições estão sendo migrados para Ubuntu Linux. A Wikipédia possui 10 milhões de artigos em 250 idiomas e está entre os 10 sites mais visitados no mundo.

As razão apontada para a migração foi que eles não querem pagar pelo suporte em soluções de software fornecidas pelo Red Hat. Justificaram também com o fato do Ubuntu Linux ser atualizado com maior freqüência, e o gerenciador de pacotes APT ser mais versátil.

Nas palavras de Vibber, CTO (Chief Technical Officer) da Fundação Wikimedia:

We had a mix of things: some Red Hat 9, some Fedora — several different versions. The group used a custom-scripted installation procedure, but found that having a multitude of versions was more difficult to maintain for its small five-person IT staff around the world.
